Harris was a track and field star for the Tigers excelling in track and cross-country. Running was her passion, sometimes in the mornings before school, then again during track practice and again after school. She often trained against boys seeking to better her performance.

Harris ran the relays, the 100 yard dash and the 440 yard dash. In her senior year, she posted a personal best time of 10.99 in the 100 yard dash.

She was awarded a full athletics scholarship to Alcorn State University, where she continued to compete as a runner in the relays and the 100 meters.
