Stephen Renfroe
Moss Point High School, 1967 Graduate
Stephen Renfroe was a starting running back for the 1966 Tiger football team that went 8-2-1. A lifelong resident of Moss Point, Stephen is a 1967 graduate of Moss Point High School and holds a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics from Mississippi College. Stephen taught at Magnolia Junior High School from 1971 to 1975, and retired from Chevron in 2011 after a 35-year career, which included 10 years as an environmental specialist and over 20 years managing public and government affairs for Chevron in Mississippi. After retiring from Chevron, Stephen served as Commissioner for the Southern District of the Mississippi Public Service Commission from 2013 to 2015. He has led in the startup of new programs and initiatives, including Mississippi’s Excel By 5 early childhood initiative, the Pascagoula River Audubon Center in Moss Point, The National Audubon Society’s volunteer call center following the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill, Chevron’s daycare recovery project after Hurricane Katrina, and the Moss Point Sports Hall of Fame. While on the Public Service Commission, Stephen led in devising an equitable cost recovery proceeding for equipment in commercial operation at Mississippi Power Company’s Kemper County project. While at Chevron, Stephen led in the negotiation for Jackson County Port Authority to purchase four billion gallons of water from the Pat Harrison Waterway District’s Okatibbee Reservoir and for the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality to release a billion gallons into the Pascagoula River watershed, ultimately assuring Jackson County industrial water withdrawal from the Pascagoula River during an extreme drought in the early 2000s. Stephen was inducted into the Southern Public Relations Federation Hall of Fame in 2016. He and his wife, Debby, have been married over 50 years. They have an adult son, Robert.
